The classic 8-day Peru itinerary, explained
Eight days is the length most travelers wish they had chosen. It covers the icons — Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain — with enough breathing room to acclimatize and actually enjoy them. Here is how a well-paced 8-day trip flows, day by day.
The 8-day flow at a glance
The golden rule is to climb gently: start lower, end higher. We slot Rainbow Mountain near the end, once your body has had days to adjust to the altitude.
| Day | Where | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive Cusco | Rest, easy walk, acclimatize |
| 2 | Cusco city | City tour + nearby Inca ruins |
| 3 | Sacred Valley | Pisac, Ollantaytambo, overnight in the valley |
| 4 | Machu Picchu | Train to Aguas Calientes, guided visit |
| 5 | Return to Cusco | Relaxed day, optional Maras–Moray |
| 6 | Rainbow Mountain | Early start, high-altitude day trip |
| 7 | Free day | Markets, museums or a spare buffer day |
| 8 | Depart | Fly out of Cusco |
Days 1–3: Cusco and the Sacred Valley
Land in Cusco and do almost nothing on arrival — hydrate, walk slowly, sleep well. Day two is the city tour, perfect for easing into the altitude. Day three drops into the lower, warmer Sacred Valley, where Pisac's terraces and Ollantaytambo's fortress set the scene for Machu Picchu.
Day 4: Machu Picchu
The centerpiece. From the Sacred Valley you take the scenic train to Aguas Calientes, then a short bus up to the citadel for a guided visit. Going from the valley (rather than racing from Cusco) makes for a calmer, fuller day. See our Machu Picchu options for circuit and ticket choices.
Days 5–8: Rainbow Mountain and a buffer day
After Machu Picchu, a relaxed return day keeps the pace humane. By day six you are acclimatized enough for Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) at over 5,000 m. We always leave a flexible day near the end — for markets, a museum, or simply weather insurance. It is the difference between a trip that feels rushed and one that feels right.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Eight days comfortably covers Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain with time to acclimatize and a flexible buffer day.
Visit Machu Picchu first and Rainbow Mountain later. Rainbow Mountain is much higher, so giving your body extra days to adjust makes it far more enjoyable.
We strongly recommend one. It absorbs weather delays, gives you a slower day at altitude, and turns a tight schedule into a relaxed one.
Absolutely. You can swap Rainbow Mountain for Humantay Lake, add the Maras and Moray salt terraces, or extend toward Lake Titicaca.
