About this tour

Our Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco takes you to two of Peru's most spectacular natural wonders in a single unforgettable day: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) and the lesser-known Red Valley. Rising above 5,030 meters, Vinicunca is famous worldwide for the vivid bands of turquoise, gold and crimson that streak its slopes — colours created by millions of years of mineral sediment revealed as the glaciers retreated.

Just beyond the main viewpoint, the Red Valley opens up in deep burgundy hues that few travelers ever see — a quieter, equally breathtaking reward for those who make the short extra walk. Throughout the Vinicunca hike you'll share the trail with grazing llamas and alpacas, meet local Quechua herders, and take in sweeping views of the snow-capped Ausangate range. With an early start from Cusco, small groups of up to 14, and certified Andean guides who carry oxygen, it's the safest and most rewarding way to experience the Mountain of Seven Colors.

Full Day · Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley

04:00 AMDeparture from Cusco. Impressive views toward Rainbow Mountain and the Andean glaciers await this beautiful natural formation at 5,030 m above sea level. We begin our tour with an early-morning pickup at your hotel in Cusco.

06:00 AMBreakfast in Cusipata. We travel by van for about 2 hours to the town of Cusipata, where we'll have breakfast before heading 1 more hour to the trailhead at 4,400 m above sea level.

09:00 AMThe hike begins. From the trailhead, we start to climb slowly, walking for about 3 hours up to the viewpoint at 5,030 m. You'll have an amazing view of Rainbow Mountain and the beautiful Red Valley, which gets its color from the high mineral content of the region. Incredible views of snow-covered peaks surround the area.

13:00 PMDescent. After enjoying the incredible views, we start walking back down — completing the descent in about 1.5 hours — to the starting point, where we board the van to make our way to Cusipata for lunch.

16:00 PMReturn to Cusco. Arriving back at your accommodation in Cusco around 4:00 PM, after lunch.

Altitude note: The hiking path goes from 4,400 to 5,030 m above sea level. You may experience some symptoms of altitude sickness — soroche or headaches. That's why we bring oxygen along to help participants if any trouble arises.

Before you go

A few essentials we strongly recommend to make your Rainbow Mountain day the most rewarding possible.

Acclimatize first

Spend at least 2 full days in Cusco (3,400 m) before this tour. The summit reaches 5,030 m — higher than the Everest base camp. Hydrate constantly, drink coca tea, avoid alcohol, eat light meals, walk gently.

Physical fitness

The hike is rated moderate: 3 hours uphill + 1.5 hours back down. If you can walk steadily for 4–5 hours at home, you'll be fine. Horses are available at the trailhead (~ US $20) if needed.

Best time to go

Dry season: April to October. Skies are clearer, trails firm, colors most vibrant. Avoid the rainy season (Dec–Mar), when colors mute under cloud cover. We run tours year-round but recommend the dry months.

Sun & weather

The Andean sun is intense at 5,000 m. Bring sunscreen SPF 50+, a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, lip balm with SPF, and dress in layers. Pre-dawn is below freezing; midday can hit 18°C in the sun.

Cancellations & weather

Free cancellation up to 30 days before the tour. In case of dangerous weather (snowstorms, road closures), we'll offer a free reschedule or full refund. Safety always comes first.

What to pack

Travel light but smart. Here's exactly what we recommend bringing for a comfortable, safe day at altitude.

Essentials

  • Passport — required for the entrance ticket.
  • Hiking boots (broken in) — terrain is rocky & uneven.
  • Warm layers — fleece + thermal base. Pre-dawn below 0°C.
  • Wind & rain jacket — weather changes fast.
  • Beanie & gloves — your extremities will thank you.
  • Sun hat + sunglasses — UV at altitude is brutal.
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ + lip balm with SPF.
  • Reusable water bottle 1–1.5 L.
  • Daypack 20–25 L — light, comfortable.
  • Peruvian soles in cash — for Red Valley & tips (~ S/. 50).

Nice to Have

  • Camera + extra battery — cold drains batteries fast.
  • Snacks — energy bars, dried fruit, nuts.
  • Coca leaves or candy — helps with altitude.
  • Personal medication + altitude pills (if prescribed).
  • Microfiber towel — handy for sweat or rain.
  • Trekking poles — useful for descent (we provide if needed).
  • Travel insurance card — emergency contacts.
  • First-aid items — band-aids, blister patches, ibuprofen.
