Huayna Picchu vs Machu Picchu Mountain: which should you climb?
Visiting Machu Picchu, you can add a climb up one of two peaks that tower over the citadel: the famous Huayna Picchu or the taller Machu Picchu Mountain. They need different tickets and offer very different experiences. Here is how to choose the right one.
The two peaks at a glance
Both are optional add-ons that require a specific entrance ticket booked well in advance, and both are separate from the standard citadel visit. The short version: Huayna Picchu is the steep, iconic peak you see behind the postcard; Machu Picchu Mountain is higher, longer and less vertigo-inducing, with a wide panoramic view.
| Huayna Picchu | Machu Picchu Mountain | |
|---|---|---|
| Height above citadel | ~260 m | ~600 m |
| Trail | Steep, narrow, exposed | Long, steady switchbacks |
| Time | ~2–3 h round trip | ~3–4 h round trip |
| View | Down onto the citadel | Wide panorama of the whole area |
| Best for | Thrill and the classic angle | Endurance hikers, less exposure |
Huayna Picchu: the iconic climb
This is the peak everyone recognizes. The reward is a dramatic bird's-eye view straight down onto Machu Picchu. The trail is steep, narrow and exposed in places, so it is not ideal if you strongly dislike heights — but it is unforgettable, and permits sell out earliest.
Machu Picchu Mountain: the panoramic climb
Higher but less scary. The path is a long, steady set of switchbacks rather than exposed steps, leading to a summit with a sweeping view of the citadel, the river and surrounding peaks. It is the better pick for confident walkers who want big views without the vertigo.
