Exploring the Inca Trail: Different Paths to Machu Picchu

Day 1: Cusco to Wayllabamba

Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Cusco to Km 82, the starting point of the Inca Trail. The initial trek follows the Urubamba River, offering views of the Veronica glacier. Along the way, visit the archaeological site of Patallacta before continuing to Wayllabamba, where you’ll set up camp for the night.

Day 2: Wayllabamba to Pacaymayo

After breakfast, tackle the challenging ascent to Warmiwañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point of the trek at 4,200 meters. This segment offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. After reaching the pass, descend into the Pacaymayo valley to establish your second campsite.

Day 3: Pacaymayo to Wiñayhuayna

Start the day with a visit to the Runkurakay archaeological complex, followed by a trek through diverse landscapes, including cloud forests rich in flora and fauna. Explore the Sayacmarca ruins and pass through an Incan tunnel before reaching the Phuyupatamarca site. Continue descending to the Wiñayhuayna campsite, your final stop before Machu Picchu.

Day 4: Wiñayhuayna to Machu Picchu

Rise early to reach Intipunku, the Sun Gate, in time for sunrise over Machu Picchu. From this vantage point, enjoy your first breathtaking view of the ancient citadel. Descend into Machu Picchu for a guided tour of its main attractions, including the Main Square, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Solar Clock, the Royal Quarters, and the Temple of the Three Windows. After the tour, take time to explore the site at your leisure before returning to Cusco via Aguas Calientes.

What is the Inka Trail?

The Inca Trail is an ancient network of roads constructed by the Inca civilization that connected various regions of the Inca Empire. The most popular and well-traveled segment is the one leading to Machu Picchu, starting from the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Inca Trail Routes

There are several routes to reach Machu Picchu, with the most well-known being:

  1. Classic Inca Trail (4 days / 3 nights)
  2. Short Inca Trail (2 days / 1 night)
