Andes and Amazon in one trip: is it possible?

8 min read Local Cusco team Updated June 2026

Snow-capped peaks one day, macaws and monkeys the next — combining the high Andes with the Amazon is one of the great things Peru makes easy. Cusco is the launch pad for both. Here is how to fit mountains and rainforest into a single trip without it feeling like a marathon.

Yes — and here's how it works

From Cusco you can reach the Manu and Tambopata rainforest regions overland or by short flight, which means one base city unlocks two completely different worlds. The usual pattern is to do the Andes first — Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu — then drop into the jungle to finish on a slower, warmer note.

How many days you need

Realistically, give the combination 9 to 12 days. The Andes portion needs 5 to 7 (including acclimatization and Machu Picchu); the Amazon needs at least 3 to 4 to make the journey in and out worthwhile.

What you'll actually see

In the rainforest, patience is rewarded: macaws at clay licks, monkeys, caimans, capybaras and an extraordinary density of birds and insects. It is a sensory opposite to the thin, bright air of the mountains. Our 4-day Manu Amazon tour and shorter 3-day jungle trip are built around the best wildlife-watching windows.

Practical tips for the combo

Do the Andes first so the jungle becomes your relaxed finale. Pack in layers — you will go from near-freezing passes to humid heat in 48 hours. Expect basic comforts deep in the rainforest; that is the trade-off for genuine wilderness. And keep a buffer day: jungle transfers and weather do not always run on schedule.
