Cusco City Tour: the complete half-day guide
The Cusco City Tour is the perfect way to begin a trip to the Andes: a gentle half day that walks you through the heart of the old Inca capital and up to the great fortress and shrines on the hills above it — and it doubles as the smartest way to acclimatize before anything more demanding.
What the Cusco City Tour covers
The classic tour is a half day of around five hours, usually leaving in the early afternoon. It begins in the city at Qorikancha and then climbs to the four Inca sites that ring Cusco — Sacsayhuamán, Q'enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay — with a local guide and transport between each stop. It is mostly comfortable driving with short, easy walks, which is exactly what you want on your first day at 3,400 metres.
The five stops, one by one
Qorikancha was the richest temple in the Inca empire, its walls once sheathed in gold. The Spanish built the church of Santo Domingo straight on top of it, so today you see flawless Inca stonework carrying a colonial convent — the clearest lesson in Cusco's layered history.
Sacsayhuamán is the showpiece: enormous zig-zag ramparts built from stones weighing many tonnes, cut and fitted so tightly that nothing can slip between them. It overlooks the whole city and is the highlight of the afternoon.
Q'enqo is a carved limestone outcrop with channels and a hidden altar, thought to have been used for ceremonies. Puka Pukara, the "red fort", guarded the road into the valley, and Tambomachay, the "bath of the Inca", still channels spring water through finely cut stone fountains that run to this day.
Tickets, timing and what to bring
The four archaeological sites are covered by the Boleto Turístico (the Cusco tourist ticket), while Qorikancha and the Cathedral charge separate entry — budget a little extra for those. Afternoons are the most common departure, which also leaves your morning free to rest after arriving. Bring sun protection, water and a light layer, since the Andean sun is strong and the air cools quickly once the sun drops (see our Cusco packing list).

Why do it on your first day
Because it is gentle and low-effort, the city tour is the ideal first activity while your body adjusts to the altitude. Pair it with a slow first day, plenty of water and a couple of hours of rest, and you will be far better prepared for a trek or a high day trip like Rainbow Mountain. If you have time, follow it with the Sacred Valley the next day — the natural second step before Machu Picchu.
