Cusco packing list: what to wear and bring

8 min read Local Cusco team Updated March 2026

Cusco’s mountain climate is a game of extremes — freezing dawns, strong midday sun, cool nights, and the odd shower. Pack for layers, sun and altitude and you will be comfortable everywhere from the city to the trail. Here is the local-tested list.

The golden rule: layers

Temperatures swing wildly in a single day at 3,400 m. The trick is layering: a base layer, a warm mid-layer (fleece or down) and a waterproof shell. Add and shed as the day changes.

Mountain weather changes fast — layers keep you comfortable all day.

The essentials checklist

Clothing

  • Base layers and breathable t-shirts
  • Warm fleece or light down jacket
  • Waterproof/windproof jacket
  • Comfortable hiking trousers
  • Broken-in walking shoes or boots
  • Hat, gloves and a buff for cold mornings
  • Sun hat and sunglasses

Sun and altitude

  • High-SPF sunscreen (the UV is intense at altitude)
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Any personal medication; consider altitude tablets

Handy extras

  • Small daypack
  • Power bank and universal adapter
  • Cash in soles for markets and tips
  • Insect repellent for cloud-forest and jungle days

Trekking? Pack a little differently

For the Inca Trail or Salkantay, you will want proper trekking gear and a warm sleeping setup — see our dedicated Inca Trail packing guide. And read up on altitude before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Dress in layers: a base layer, a warm fleece or down mid-layer and a waterproof shell, plus a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen for the strong mountain sun.

For city and Sacred Valley days, comfortable walking shoes are fine. For multi-day treks like the Inca Trail or Salkantay, broken-in hiking boots are strongly recommended.

Dawns and nights in the dry season can drop near or below freezing, while midday is mild and sunny — which is why layering matters so much.
