The road from Cusco to the Amazon is one of the most dramatic in South America: in a single day it drops from the high Andes through cloud forest into the rainforest. This three-day tour follows it to a lodge on the edge of the Manu region, with river trips, a jungle lagoon and, at dawn, the colour and noise of a parrot clay lick.

Day 1: from the Andes to the cloud forest
You leave Cusco at about 6:00 am and stop at Lake Huacarpay, the pre-Inca burial towers (chullpas) of Ninamarca and the colonial town of Paucartambo. After the high passes, the road descends into the cloud forest, home of the cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, with orchids, ferns and waterfalls along the way. You reach Guadalupe Lodge for dinner and an evening walk to look for frogs, insects and night creatures.

Day 2: the Madre de Dios River and Machuhuasi Lagoon
A short drive through tropical plantations brings you to the port of Atalaya, where a motorboat takes you down the Madre de Dios River (about an hour) to Machuhuasi Lagoon. Trails around the lagoon are good for spotting hoatzins, capybaras, kingfishers and monkeys, while your guide explains the medicinal plants of the forest. After lunch by the lagoon, you return to the lodge.
Day 3: the parrot clay lick and back to Cusco
At dawn the boat takes you to a parrot clay lick, where, weather permitting, more than fifteen species of parrots and macaws gather on the riverbank. After breakfast you visit a family-run wildlife rescue centre, then drive back over the Andes, reaching Cusco at around 5:00 pm.
Guadalupe Lodge
You sleep in a private room with its own bathroom, hot shower, Wi-Fi and a balcony over the garden — comfortable by jungle standards. Meals are freshly prepared at the lodge, and the garden itself attracts birds and butterflies.
