At 9:00 AM, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and head towards the charming town of Maras and the impressive agricultural terraces of Moray. It is believed that the Incas used this fascinating area to create microclimates, allowing them to adapt various plants, flowers, and other products from different parts of the Inca Empire. After exploring Moray, we will visit the salt mines, known as "salineras," located just below Maras. These mines are still in operation, with local farmers working in them throughout the day. On our return to Cusco, we will stop by the colonial temple of Chinchero and its famous artisan market. Here, you'll also have the chance to witness a wonderful demonstration of natural wool dyeing, using plants, seeds, and minerals. The tour concludes in Cusco at approximately 1:30 PM, and we will drop you off at your respective hotels.
The terraces at Moray are believed to have been an Inca agricultural laboratory designed to study the effects of different microclimates on crops. The varying depths and levels of the terraces allowed the Incas to experiment with a wide range of plants and improve agricultural techniques.
The salt mines, or "salineras," have been used since pre-Inca times and continue to be an important source of salt. Local farmers extract salt from the natural springs by evaporating the water in thousands of shallow pools, a traditional method that has been passed down through generations.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater, as temperatures can vary. Don’t forget a camera to capture the stunning views and unique sites.
The tour involves walking and some uphill or uneven terrain, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended. If you have any mobility issues, please inform us in advance so we can make necessary arrangements.
The tour typically lasts about 4 to 5 hours, including transportation time from Cusco. This includes visits to both the salt mines and the terraces, as well as a stop at Chinchero if included in the itinerary.
