We pick you up from your hotel and drive through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo station, with a stop for photos and a short visit to the living Inca town on the way. In the afternoon you board the scenic train that follows the Urubamba River to Aguas Calientes (about 1h40), the town nestled beneath the citadel. Check in to your hotel, enjoy dinner in town and rest before your early start.
After breakfast you take one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu for a guided tour of about 2.5–3 hours through its temples, plazas and palaces, with time at the classic viewpoint for photos before it fills up. Then take on the star of this tour: the steep, exhilarating climb up Huayna Picchu (2,693 m) on carved Inca stairs, for the famous aerial view straight down over the citadel (about 2–3 hours round trip). Descend to Aguas Calientes, then take the train and private transfer back to Cusco (arrival in the evening).
