Huchuy Qosqo and Inca Trail 4 days: the complete guide

9 min read Local Cusco team Updated February 2026

This four-day route is a quiet gem. It starts high in the Sacred Valley on the little-walked Huchuy Qosqo trail, then joins the Short Inca Trail for the legendary walk through the Sun Gate into Machu Picchu — culture, solitude and the iconic finish, all in one.

Two trails, almost no crowds

The first half crosses high passes to the royal estate of Huchuy Qosqo, “Little Cusco”, where you will likely have the ruins to yourself. The second half puts you on the original Inca pathway past Wiñay Wayna to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate.

The Huchuy Qosqo highlands see a fraction of the Inca Trail crowds.

Difficulty, permits and timing

It is a moderate-to-hard trek with high passes on day one, so acclimatize in Cusco first. The Inca Trail section uses a Short Inca Trail permit — easier to get than the Classic, but still book ahead via the permit calendar. Go in the dry season for the clearest passes.
